What Does it Really Mean?

August 12, 2026

When you use the word "average", are you referring to Mean, Median, or Mode? Do you know for sure? You probably use the term "average" more often than you notice, but are you sure you know what it is representing? Let's see the common uses in the business world where "average" is used to describe a dataset or series of observations with just ONE number: average customer age, average score, average order value, average rate of return, average performance, and so on.

You might wonder why this matters in terms of getting right. Let's see how this one number is used by many businesses during meetings, presentations, and even when making decisions about a specific performance metric.

A single number to highlight. An answer to provide proof. A "datapoint" to "drive" business quickly.

What if I pointed out what many of you already know in your gut, more explicitly? What if you don't really understand what this number is representing? How badly can it impact your outcomes if the wrong decision is made in haste?

That speed during decision-making time is exactly why the word "average" and how it was measured matters, and why it has the potential for getting businesses into trouble.
